Like your car, your pool and spa filter requires regularly scheduled maintenance in order to keep it operating normally. Generally, the routine maintenance that we perform on a weekly basis covers the vast majority of scheduled maintenance for your pool filter, but additional maintenance items are required from time to time depending upon your particular pool /spa filter.
Due to these additional maintenance requirements our customers are put on a filter cleaning schedule; every six months for D.E. filters, and every four months for cartridge filters. This service is an additional service that we provide to our customers at an additional charge. Filter cleaning charges vary depending upon your pool /spa filter type. Please contact us for pricing and availability.
Equipment manufactures recommend breaking down and chemically cleaning the internals of your D.E. filter on a semi-annual basis. The process of cleaning your D.E. filter requires that your filter be broken down, and thoroughly cleaned of contaminates and debris. Upon completion of your filters cleaning, our service techs will thoroughly inspect the internals of your pool / spa filter for any damage. If no damage is present, our tech will put your filter back together and recharge your filter with D.E. The internals of your D.E. filter consists of eight filter grids, a grid assembly, a top and bottom manifold, and an air relief assembly.
While routine maintenance generally prevents damage to these items, damage sometimes does indeed occur. The skeletons of the grids break, and the grids develop rips in them, allowing dirt and other debris to return to your pool. Manifolds develop cracks in them over time, which also allows dirt and other debris to return to your pool. Our pool filter maintenance technicians are thoroughly trained to recognize any present or potential damage to your pool / spa’s filter and can repair or replace the part on site.
Just like D.E. filters, cartridge filters need to broken down and chemically cleaned of organic compounds and oils. Unlike D.E. filters, this process needs to be performed every four months. The increased cleaning schedule for these filters is due to the material used in the construction of the filter element and is absolutely necessary in order to maximize your filter’s water filtration efficiency.
Generally your pool cartridge filter contains four cartridges. Each time your cartridge filter is cleaned, some of the cartridge’s filtering ability is reduced. Due to this natural reduction in filtering efficiency, the cartridge should be replaced every 2 - 5 yrs, depending on the work it was asked to do. If the filter was a bit undersized, and had some algae every year and lots of tree debris, etc. then it may last only 1 - 2 years.
Just like D.E or cartridge filters, sand filters require periodic maintenance as well. Unlike D.E. or cartridge filters, your sand filter only needs maintenance every three to five years in the form of a sand change. If your filter has been backwashed regularly, this service can be extended to every 5 to 7 years. The sand in a sand filter is specially graded to trap particles in the 20 - 100 micron range. As a sand filter collects dirt, its efficiency increases, trapping even more dirt. While sand filters generally require less maintenance, the sand in your filter should be replaced every three to five years. Gradual loss of efficiency may be hard to notice, but if your filter requires frequent backwashing, every week or two, the sand bed in your filter may be "mudballed", or it may be "channeled".
It may also "calcify" with calcium deposits. High amounts of bather oils can also gum-up a sand bed. Such sand becomes more circular, and traps dirt less efficiently. Due to these known issues, replacing the sand in your filter is necessary in order to maintain its water filtration efficiency. If the sand in your sand filter has not been changed within the last three years, it is probably time to change it. Please contact us for pricing and availability.
Just like other large appliances in your home, your pool equipment is designed to provide you with years of continuous use without failure. But even with regularly scheduled maintenance of your pool or spa’s equipment, it will eventually break down. Fortunately, when this does happen we are able to fix anything that breaks or goes bad with your pool equipment.
Our knowledgeable and friendly repair technicians have attended numerous manufacturer sponsored training events and are continually educated on the latest aspects of pool and spa equipment technology.
